Tech Barn update: Ubercomputer v4.0-Genesis

It’s been a while since I posted my soon-to-be-procured new computer specs, and since then some things have changed. By all means avoid hitting “Read Article” unless you’re interested in a few gory details.

Now that we’re into the loan procurement phase of the purchase of our new house, I don’t want to go crazy with the credit cards setting up this beast yet, but I have verified with HR that I am now eligible for the loan/subsidy combo.

So I made my first purchase this weekend: two Western Digital 120GB hard drives with 8MB buffer. The large buffer size of these drives is unique to the best of my knowledge, and according to Jeff (about 2/3 of the way down on this page), it results in super-bad-ass throughput for stuff like digital video editing. Not that I’m planning on doing any of that, but screw it; only the best for Dave this time around. I’m through dealing with low-end machines, dammit.

That’s a total of 240GB of non-bottlenecking non-volatile memory for the next-generation desktop machine that will soon be sitting on my desk. Hell, since I can’t see myself even using up one of those drives, maybe I’ll just make the other one the world’s most capable mirror drive. I shoulda got a RAID card while I was at it.

And so the journey begins. As I purchase more components for Ubercomputer, I’ll be sure to keep both of you JesusH Tech Barn fans appraised of my progress. Isn’t this going to be great?

(The answer to that question, incidentally, is “yes it is!”)

  1. I was totally going to say: “Yes it is!” We should start spending more time apart.
